Everyday Habits That Can Help You Look Younger

So, you want to look younger — and by younger, we don’t mean being a 60-year-old man wearing stonewashed jeans. That would just make you look like a 60-year-old man wearing stonewashed jeans — aka — ridiculous. But, there are some everyday habits that you can form that will actually make you look younger in a good way. Here are some to get you started.

1. Get enough sleep

Do you have bags under your eyes and look tired all the time? Well, it’s probably because you are tired and you need more sleep. In fact, a study, commissioned by skincare giant, Estée Lauder found that sleep quality impacts skin function and aging. The study showed that poor sleepers had increased signs of skin aging and slower recovery from many environmental stressors.

The American Academy of Sleep Medicine and the Sleep Research Society says that it is necessary for adults to get at least seven hours of sleep per night. If you’re not getting those critical hours, make some adjustments so you do.

2. Drink water

Our bodies are made up of  mostly water, with it accounting for 70 – 75%  of our body weight, according to reports. Without water, our bodies don’t function, and that includes having healthy skin and hair — not to mention, the absence of it after only a few days will prove lethal.

Even with its life-saving powers, water also does wonders when it comes to keeping you youthful, particularly in your skin. Just think about dehydrated fruit like grapes. Without water they shrivel up into wrinkled raisins. The same happens to your skin. If your skin is not getting enough water, your skin will dry out, be tight, flaky and less resilient to harmful substances.

While it has been often recommended to drink eight 8-ounce glasses (half a gallon) every day, you really should use yourself as your guide. Water comes from many other sources like fruits and vegetables, and you may be getting a lot of water without keeping a constant flow going. So basically when you’re thirsty, drink. When you’re not thirsty anymore, stop.

3. Exercise daily

There are many ways that daily exercise can make you look younger, and it isn’t just your waistline. Regular exercise helps improve posture, as well as your mood and sleep patterns. It has also been shown to slows cells from aging.

And that sweat that drips from your pores may actually be a key component in the soft and suppleness of your skin.

4. Eat your veggies

You’ve been told this since you were young, and had you obeyed this advice, you would likely not be reading this. However, it’s not too late to start eating your vegetables regularly.

Vegetables are full of nutrients like antioxidants that combat those harmful toxins that wreak havoc on your skin and hair. Many vegetables like carrots, pumpkin and sweet potatoes are high in beta carotene that protects against sun radiation and free radicals.

Vitamin C is also a key vitamin that helps produce collagen and also acts as an antioxidant. One observational study linked dietary nutrient intakes including Vitamin C, with positive skin-aging among middle-aged American women. Some veggies with a solid amount of Vitamin C are broccoli, leafy greens and bell peppers.

5. Don’t forget fruit

Much like vegetables, fruit also contain antioxidants including Vitamin C and water that will help improve your skin and hair, causing you to look more youthful.

Some fruits to try are pomegranates, watermelon, tomatoes, blueberries and oranges. All are loaded with the good stuff.

6. Meditate

Oftentimes we get wrapped up in the stresses of life that can wreak havoc on our appearance.  Stress has been found in many studies to cause damage to skin. And while the verdict on its effects on grey hair, just look at pictures of former US Presidents before and after office, and you be the judge.

Meditation is an age-old practice that serves the purpose of being in the moment, and thinking about only the things you can control — essentially refocusing your mind to eliminate unnecessary stress. There are many ways to meditate, which could include finding a quiet place, or it could be simply doing something you love that is so innately you, that you are able to be in the moment without worry.

7. Read

Reading is a way of transporting your mind into another world through complete focus — even meditation. There is nothing quite like getting lost in a book, and it can actually improve your mental state, hence improving the way you look.

A Yale study actually found that people over 50 who read up to three-and-a-half hours a week were 17 percent less likely to die over the 12 years of follow-up. And those who read more than that increased that rate by more than 10 points up to 23 percent!

8. Show gratitude

A series of studies spanning individuals of all ages published in Psychology Today found that  those who showed gratitude report healthier eating over time.

After all, when you are grateful for what you have, you are more likely to have a positive outlook on life. When you are positive, you do good things like eat healthier, exercise more and sleep better — all key ingredients to a more youthful-looking you.
