Did you know that the way you sleep reveals a lot about who you are as an individual?

For example, people who sleep on their back are the strong, silent type; and people who sleep on their stomach have an open, friendly, and playful personality.

But what happens when you put together different sleeping styles, and personalities, into one bed?

When we fall asleep, our subconscious minds take over. According to Patti Wood, a body language expert with more than 30 years of experience and author of Success Signals: A Guide to Reading Body Language, this is the reason why the body language we use with a partner while we sleep can be an extremely precise way to see what’s going on in our relationships.

The Spoon

We can say that this sleeping position is kinda rare since it’s only adopted by a fifth (18 percent) of couples. It demonstrates a dynamic in which, “One partner takes a protective stance over the other.”

According to Patti Wood, this is “a very vulnerable position that’s sexual, but says, ‘I trust you’.”

The Loose Spoon

The loose spoon is very similar to the spoon position, but with a slight gap between the bodies instead of that intense coverage.

According to Woods, this position says “I’ve got your back, you can count on me,” but it’s not as sexual as the Spoon position.

The Chase

Similar to spooning, but it’s when one person chases the other. When one drifts to the other side of the bed, and the other one is “after” them.

This position usually means two things. One that the person who is being chased wants to be pursued, or is playing hard to get.

The Tangle

We can say that this extremely intimate position is the rarest. It usually happens when there are intense emotions in play (like after making love) or at the beginning of a romantic relationship.

The Unravelling Knot

This is the position that starts with the tangle, but then unravels after a few minutes.

According to Dr. Sweet, a relationship psychologist, this position is a sign of a stronger relationship than the Tangle. “A compromise between intimacy and independence, allowing for the best of both worlds.”

Liberty Lovers

Don’t be afraid if you and your partner sleep facing opposite directions with space in between. It’s actually a good thing!

According to a study by Dr. Sweet, couples that sleep back-to-back without contact are “connected and secure in themselves. This position explains both closeness and independence in the relationship”.

The Nuzzle

According to Dr. Sweet, the position in which one partner rests their head on the other’s chest (with intertwined legs) is often seen in early relationships.

This sleeping position eventually creates a strong sense of protection. A psychologist and martial therapist, Shirley Glass, notes: “There is a high level of trust there,” as this sweet position has a “strengthening sense of comradeship and protection.”

The Leg Hug

According to Wood, if one partner is playing footsie with the other in bed, or intertwines their legs, it means they crave an emotional or sexual connection.

This is also a sign that the two of you can’t get enough of each other – even when you’re sleeping.

The Space Hog

Also known as the Starfish position, one in which the partner sprawls out and hogs the bed, the Space Hog position means that the partner tends to be selfish – especially if they start to push the other partner off the bed.
